Why Improve Your Memory?
Who needs a good memory when you have a palm pilot, a computer, and a cell phone ready to remember for you? Many people are under the illusion that the information age has freed us from the burden of remembering when, in fact, it has increased the load. Just think of the number of passwords, pin numbers and names you have to memorize just to function in your day-to-day life. What about all the times you have a brilliant idea sitting in traffic, or remember something you need to do while in the shower? Until they invent a waterproof laptop computer, you will have to rely on your memory to remember such tidbits of information. The trick with memory and your brain is that it's like any other muscle...you have to use it or you lose it. The more you exercise your memory, the more powerful it becomes. Just because you don't have to remember something in your head, because it's safely stored somewhere else, you should still do it every once and a while to keep yourself sharp. When you learn a new phone number, for example, repeat it to yourself several times before plugging into your palm pilot. It may do you some good.
Here are a few other reasons why you should work on developing a strong, active memory:
- To remember facts, details and important things to do.
- To memorize ists of names, numbers, etc.
- To increase confidence for public speaking and meetings
- To remember people you've met (their personal information and faces).
- Inspiration strikes while you're driving in your car. No paper!
- You can't refer to your notes when you're trying to remember your bosses wife's name.
- Having a good memory is impressive; it shows dedication and preparation.
